Curriculum:
ELA- Reading, English, Spelling- Welcome to a new school year. We are off to a great start. We are forming our reading groups through the guidance of Fountas and Pinnell testing. In the meantime, we have been exploring the selections in our whole group "Journey's " text. In the selection "Because of Winn Dixie" we learned the importance of helping our friends. We are learning about the early life of Martin Luther King, Jr. from the biography "My Brother Martin." Our spelling list coincides with the selection we are covering in our Journey's text. We are reviewing the fundamentals of writing. We can distinguish a sentence from a fragment. We also can locate the subject and predicate part of the sentence. We will be learning the four kinds of sentences, Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative, and Exclamatory. We will become good writers by putting into practice all that we have learned.
Religion- We continue to learn more about Jesus, who shows us the way God the Father wants us to live. We understand that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. We learn that Jesus teaches in the Beatitudes the way to true happiness. Free will, choices, and sin are examined. We remember that by following Jesus, we grow closer to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Science- We have discovered the importance of classifying living things into large groups called kingdoms. We are concentrating on the animal kingdom and the groups of vertebrates and invertebrates. We are exploring the smaller groups within the large groups. We are making microscope slides to study vertebrate/invertebrate parts using hand-held microscopes. We will choose an unusual animal to research and report back to the class. Soon, we will be investigating the steps of the Scientific Method.
Social Studies- History is a big part of Social Studies. We have learned to read and make a time line that records the past. We've studied cause and effect relationships that have resulted in the history we experience each day. We are learning to think like a historian by examining evidence, such as, primary and secondary sources. We will be learning the 5 themes of geography and Pennsylvania's place in the world. We will learn its location, relative and absolute, as well as, latitude and longitude. We will also be able to name its bordering states. Later, we will work with the cardinal and intermediate directions along with the regions of Pennsylvania.
Math- We continue to adjust to our new math series "My Math." It challenges us to think on a higher level with more in depth thought. We covered place value to the millions place and can distinguish the value of each digit. We read multi-digit numbers. We compared and rounded numbers to the hundred thousands place. We are examining problem solving strategies to aid us in a step by step procedure leading to a solution. We will be practicing strategies to use to add and subtract.
